Geography

Geography
Gabon is in the west of the African continent and borders Equatorial Guinea to the north-west, Cameroon to the north, the Republic of Congo to the south and east , and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. 80% of its territory is covered in forest and the average density of population is 4 people per km 2.
The Gavilo Camp, which is near the Loango National Park, is in the south-west of Gabon, in the Ogooué-Maritime province.

The Park
The abundance of flora and fauna and the diversity of the forests, savannah, rivers and lagoons bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, make this area a natural gem. Guided outings are organised to see the buffalo, antelope, hippopotamus, elephants and other wildlife. There is a wide array of birds – osprey, parrots, pelicans – and you might be lucky enough to see one of the rare gorilla or a family of chimpanzees. Along the Rembo Akaka or in the Loury lagoon you will see Nile crocodiles or smaller species but the manatee are harder to see and you may only hear the sound of them diving in the water as you approach.

The best time to observe the wildlife is the rain season. During the dry season the animals go down to the Akaka river, which can also be visited from the Gavilo camp.

Accommodation

Accommodation : The Gavilo Lodge
The Gavilo Tourist Camp was created by an association of Gabonese nature-lovers who adore their country. Located in the N’Gowé lagoon, a 5-minute boat trip from the Loango National Park, Gavilo offers an ideal environment of lagoons, rivers, forests, savannah and ocean. The N’Gowé lagoon and the Loango National Park can only be accessed by pirogue and 4WD and this remote setting will really take you away from it all. The camp has recently been renovated.

To reach the camp from Libreville you will take a plane to Port-Gentil, followed by a 2.5 hour pirogue trip to Omboué. A 1.5 hour drive by 4WD will get you to the camp which, because of its location, will ensure you of a calm and peaceful stay ….. Back to nature! The wealth of wildlife and fauna and the abundant fishing opportunities will give you the chance to diversify your activities.
Gavilo is composed of 8 bungalows, a main building with a shady terrace, a restaurant and a covered deck to have drinks after a good day out. The restaurant offers African and European cuisine and you will also be able to enjoy the bar. The rooms are simple and comfortable and have en-suite bathrooms. A laundry service is available for an extra charge. Bed linen is not changed automatically but at the guest’s request as the camp is far from everything and also to limit phosphate release. The accommodation in the air-conditioned bungalows can cater for 6 people and this number is kept low to ensure the friendly atmosphere in the camp. Electricity is provided by a generator which functions from 6.30 to 8 am and from 6.30 pm to midnight. Water is pumped and stored in tanks but is not suitable as drinking water.
